About the song
Love Came to Me
Leonard Cohen once introduced Coming Back to You as "a song in which I have achieved the ultimate confusion of God and Women."
In a similar vein, Love Came to Me was intentionally written in 2020 with a dual meaning. It can be heard as a song about the transforming power of finding love in another person, but its original inspiration was spiritual - about finding, or perhaps more accurately, being found by God.
I've always liked that the song doesn't insist on one interpretation. The language of human love and divine love can occupy much of the same territory: longing, surrender, discovery, and the sense that something - or Someone - has entered your life and changed it.
Beautiful guitars and bass from Phil Keaggy, along with a heartfelt backing vocal performance by Carter Robertson (Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter), bring warmth and depth to this track. Dan Needham shows his versatility with his expert use of brushes (do drummers even learn this skill anymore?). Once again, Dave Cleveland helped create the soundscape the track was built upon, laying down the beautiful acoustic guitars.
