About the song
Sounds of Heaven
Sounds of Heaven is a more recent recording (2025), but I think it fits naturally in this collection. When I wrote it, I had a thought along the lines of, "What if Led Zeppelin recorded a Christmas song?" That may be oversimplifying it, but the heavier rock sound, Dave Cleveland's blazing guitar solos, and the lyrics all work together to evoke an angelic visitation that gives hope to the "beautiful strugglers"—with the encouragement that "if you listen close enough, you'll hear the baby cry."
Veteran Nashville guitarist and backing vocalist on Sounds, Chris Rodriguez (Faith Hill, Kenny Loggins, Shania Twain, Winona Judd) introduced me to legendary drummer and groove master Steve Ferrone, whose remarkable career includes Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Dirty Knobs, Chaka Khan, Johnny Cash, Average White Band, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson—and the list goes on. Executive Producer, Lynn Nichols brought in Jack White bassist Dominic John Davis, whose playing completed an extraordinary rock band for the track.
For a song that began with the unlikely idea of combining the power of classic rock with the wonder of Christmas, Sounds of Heaven became something very special to me.
